The endocrine system is the collection of glands that produce our hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep and mood, among other things. Our lifestyle, genetics and environment can all affect our hormones but there is also something to look out for; endocrine disruptors. Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that can interfere with our hormones and can cause cancerous tumors, birth defects, and other developmental disorders. These endocrine disruptors can play a big toll on our bodies
One of the main types of endocrine disruptors in personal care products is phthalates. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics defines phthalates as “materials that are derived from the organic chemical ophthalmic acid.” They are mainly used as plasticizers in plastics, but are used in make up and personal care products as solubulizers, an agent that something is dissolved in. The phthalate that is most frequently used in cosmetics is diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) as well as dimethyl phthalate (DMP) The tricky part is, now that consumers are catching on to the harmful effects of phthalates, many companies are using marketing tactics and labeling specifically DMP or DEP since many consumers are unaware they are types of phthalates.
In 2004, the European Union banned manufacture and sale of cosmetics using certain types of phthalates. In 2005, California listed certain types of phthalates as chemicals known to cause reproductive or developmental toxicity and requires label warnings when those chemicals are present at higher than designated amounts. Still, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not taken regulatory actions against the use of phthalates in cosmetics and personal care products. It gets even tricker when we consider the common ingredient, “fragrance” listed. Back in the early 1900’s, Chanel wanted to keep their perfume recipe for Chanel No5 a secret, understandably. Government decided they could use the word “fragrance” to disclose that yes they were adding fragrance, but what specifically would only be known to them. Decades and hundreds of new chemicals later, this list of hidden ingredients has reached around 800. Companies can hide around 800 harmful and unregulated chemicals behind the word “fragrance” and you guessed it, that is exactly where many companies hide phthalates. What can we do? The best way to avoid phthalates and protect your endocrine system, is to read labels and don't just look for labels stating "phthalate free" Read the ingredient list and look for DEP, DBP, and DMP and most importantly the word fragrance. Also, purchase from companies that believe in transparency; always clearly listing what fragrance they are using, if any. My favorite brand can be found here.
